"We held a meeting yesterday where officials from the foreign and home ministries, along with representatives from the immigration departments, were present. In that meeting, we decided that expatriate migrant workers will start receiving their MRP passports from December 15," he said this during a Facebook live session.
He assured that all applicants would receive their passports within three to four weeks after the distribution begins.
Priority will be given to expatriates in Saudi Arabia and Malaysia, followed by those in other high-demand regions, he added.
Asif attributed the backlog to delays caused by the previous government's handling of the passport issuance process.
"The problem originated under the previous fascist regime when an attempt was made to award the task to a company through illegal means. This caused a delay of nearly one and a half years due to resistance and tendering complications," he alleged.
He added that the current government had cancelled the earlier process and implemented the fastest possible solution, apologising for the hardships faced by expatriates.
To ensure such issues do not recur, he said that a significant number of MRP passports have been issued to clear the backlog, with no major disruptions expected in the next two to three years.
Regarding e-passports, Nazrul said plans are underway to send teams to collect biometric data from expatriates abroad, with further updates to be provided soon.
